MUSEUM RECEPTIONIST – December 2018
The Society of California Pioneers, the oldest historical society west of the Mississippi River, seeks a Museum Receptionist. As the custodian of an important historical collection, the Society seeks to preserve, promote, and enjoy California heritage through a museum, a research library, and educational and social activities. Our museum is located in the Main Post of the beautiful Presidio of San Francisco.
Duties
As Museum Receptionist, this individual will be an important representative of The Society of California Pioneers as the first point of contact for all visitors to Pioneer Hall. Responsibilities would include:
- engaging visitors by providing information about the organization’s exhibitions, public programs, library and collections
- providing front desk coverage during museum hours
- assisting with in-house mailings
- performing data entry as needed
- assisting with events and public programs
The Museum Receptionist will also participate in any variety of projects related to the activities of The Society of California Pioneers as they arise.
Hours: 2-3 days per week, weekends necessary, approx. 18-20 hours per week
Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
A team player who works well independently, has strong self-initiative and self-monitoring skills
High school diploma, or equivalent, plus four years’ relevant customer-facing experience (college coursework can substitute)
Effective interpersonal skills and a welcoming personality
Very detail oriented
Excellent command of English; ability to communicate well both orally and in writing
Excellent customer service skills
A sense of humor
An interest in history; knowledge of early California history a plus
Weekend, evening, and holiday availability
