The Lengeman Family Albums c. 1880 to 1910 – added to our collection in 2007 – are filled with wonderful, unpublished photographs, including these rare images of The 1906 San Francisco Earthquake and Fire. This collection is a prime example of vernacular photography (images by lesser known or amateur makers, including those found in family photo albums).
The Lengeman Brothers, George and Charles, ran a dry goods store in San Francisco. An avid photographer, George eventually opened a small studio on the side. In addition to the images featured in this slideshow, the albums include beautiful images of San Francisco before the disaster, Chinatown and other parts of the city that intrigued Lengeman, as well as family outings to Ocean Beach, The Cliff House and The Russian River.
