Research and Collections at the Alice Phelan Sullivan Library
The Alice Phelan Sullivan Library is a non-circulating research library that includes books, archives, manuscript materials, maps, newspapers, periodicals and ephemera. Researchers are welcome; appointments are strongly advised.

Planning Your Visit
Please call the librarian at 415.957.1849, ext.43, or contact the library by letter or e-mail to set up an appointment. Please include your name, contact information and a brief description of your research topic. By contacting us in advance, we can have the relevant research materials available for you on the day of your visit.

Reading Room Hours
The Reading Room is open Mondays through Thursdays, 10am – 5pm. Appointments are normally scheduled for Wednesdays. The Library is open to the public free of charge.

Accessing the Collections
Many of the collections are fragile and there are restrictions on the use of some original documents. Photocopy orders are filled at the discretion of the librarian.

In the reading room, databases allow access to the following collections: books, manuscripts, newspapers, photographs, and special collections. The book collection is also accessible via any library with access to World Cat –the searchable database for OCLC in which the library’s book records are also catalogued.

Autobiographies and Reminiscences of Early Pioneers are available online, in the Library Reading Room, and via the Online Archive of California.
