and Collections at the Alice Phelan Sullivan
Library
The Alice Phelan Sullivan Library is a non-circulating
research library that includes books, archives,
manuscript materials, maps, newspapers,
periodicals and ephemera. Researchers are
welcome; appointments are strongly advised.
Planning
Your Visit
Please call the librarian at 415.957.1849,
ext.43, or contact the library by letter
or e-mail
to set up an appointment. Please include
your name, contact information and a brief
description of your research topic. By contacting
us in advance, we can have the relevant
research materials available for you on
the day of your visit.
Reading
Room Hours
The Reading Room is open Mondays through
Thursdays, 10am – 5pm. Appointments
are normally scheduled for Wednesdays. The
Library is open to the public free of charge.
Accessing
the Collections
Many of the collections are fragile and
there are restrictions on the use of some
original documents. Photocopy orders are
filled at the discretion of the librarian.
In the reading room, databases allow access
to the following collections: books, manuscripts,
newspapers, photographs, and special collections.
The book collection is also accessible via
any library with access to World Cat –the
searchable database for OCLC in which the
library’s book records are also catalogued.
Autobiographies
and Reminiscences of Early Pioneers
are available online, in the Library Reading
Room, and via the Online Archive of California.
