| Autobiographies
and Reminiscences of Early Pioneers: 1900-1904: Digitization
Project.
The Alice Phelan Sullivan Library was awarded
an LSTA (Library Services and Technology Act) grant administered
by the State Library from monies from the U.S. Institute of
Museum and Library Services in September of 2002 to digitize
their collection of 153 reminiscences and 66 handwritten originals
written by early members of The Society. The grant, funded
for one year, enabled the Society to purchase scanning equipment,
hire staff, and begin our first digitization project for the
collections.
The project provides access to a collection of primary source
materials in the Library’s institutional records, which
are officially called “Autobiographies and Reminiscences
of Pioneers.” In the past these Reminiscences, as well
as other institutional records, have been frequently requested
by a wide variety of researchers. Many patrons had already
completed extensive research on their subject, and then found
additional biographical information in these accounts. The
database will enable a more efficient searching of the documents,
and the catalog record in OCLC, a worldwide database, will
make the documents more widely accessible to the general public.
