Stereoviewing 1906: 3-D Photography
and the San Francisco Quake
A lecture and demonstration by David Burkhart
Within minutes of the 1906
earthquake, photographers were on the scene,
documenting the catastrophe for posterity.
A few had special 3-D cameras. Their “stereo
views” enabled many to vicariously
experience California’s greatest natural
disaster, from the relative comfort of their
own, unshaken parlors. Burkhart, author
of Earthquake Days: The 1906 San Francisco
Earthquake & Fire in 3-D, will presents
a brief history of this captivating medium
and its unique perspective on the San Francisco
story, including a hands-on demonstration
with period views and stereoscopes.

of the 1906 Earthquake and Fire”)
