Library and Collections Discovery Program
Highlights from the Collections,
and behind the scenes tour
Tuesday, September 13, 2011
Noon- 1:00 P.M. & 5:30-6:30 P.M.
Join us for another Discovery Program highlighting items across all of our collections - on display for the day. These items will include the Vallejo Silver, The Panama Star newspaper (rare copies printed in Panama while passengers waited for ships to San Francisco), The Sutter Diary, the Lawrence & Houseworth Photographic Albums of early California scenes, early daguerreotypes portraits and views, The Journal of the Hartford Mining and Trading Company (the first printed journal of a California gold seeker, printed on board ship to California), Charles Kimball's copy of the 1850 San Francisco City Directory, the periodical The Pioneer edited by Ferdinand C. Ewer - California's first magazine (1854-55), early Britton and Rey lithographic prints and maps, early California sheet music and a selection of our paintings and prints by California artists, and other items. After a brief introduction to the collections on display and their origins, there will be a short behind-the-scenes tour of our vaults and shelving where our collections are stored. The program will give members, old and new, some insight to the depth and breadth of the collections – as well as what involves it care and preservation.
